Dental Implants Abroad

With dental implants increasing in popularity all the time, many more people are starting to investigate them as a replacement for a lost tooth or to replace their dentures. A lot though, only reach the point where they discover the price which can come to more than a thousand pounds.

This is a lot to pay for a replacement tooth, there is no doubt, and because of this, many people look to cheaper ways of getting an implant and one of these ways of course, is to have them fitted abroad. Whilst this can make a very significant reduction to the price of an implant, it is important to be aware of a number of pitfalls.

The main potential pitfall is of course, the quality of the dentistry there. In the UK, all dentists have to attain a certain, level of skill before they are certified to perform procedures. Whilst there is no doubting the fact that there are many highly qualified dentists abroad, indeed, many have come to the UK to work, different countries do have different qualification levels which may be not be up to the standard of the UK. This especially applies when travelling further to places such as Thailand for example. Even if the dentist is highly skilled, it is very difficult to have this confirmed before hand, especially if language is a barrier.

It may well be that all goes well and you are very happy with your new dental implant, however, there have been problems with some implants placed abroad and as you can imagine, this can be quite painful. If this happens, a UK dentist may be reluctant to correct another dentist’s procedure and to travel back to the dentist where the implant was placed is not only expensive but perhaps you should seriously question whether you would want to return to a dentist who had door a poor job.

Another factor to consider is that although an implant can be quite expensive, they can last for well over twenty years and therefore in the long run, it is probably worth that extra bit of investment for a long term solution.
